SHADOW AND LIGHT

4/20/2021

We were really excited to announce our theme of SHADOW AND LIGHT, as though it is such a simple theme, it provides so much room for a variety of interpretations. While CHANGE and HOME were themes directly influenced by the pandemic, with this new call we were hoping for even more nuanced, abstract concepts to be reflected through our submissions. We were especially interested in seeing creative work that explored the duality of shadow and light, highlighting their differences while also showing how they can also coexist in symbiotic harmony. The possibilities within each artistic medium are truly limitless!

Artists such as Kayla Padilla and Barrett Fraser used shadow and light to conceal, reveal, and emphasize their subjects. Writers such as S.C. Hawkins and Ryo Shaw interpreted shadow and light less literally, using them as symbolic, almost spiritual forces. In Robbie Cook’s illustration piece, shadow and light were used to set thematic tone. Tiara Brierly’s sculpture piece used shadow and light to display cause and effect.

We continue to be impressed by the talent and ambition of our creative community, and are proud to present their art to you. If you enjoy the work you see here, please consider sharing the issue and submitting to future installments.
